Today we are going to rein it in and focus on the small choices that we face on a daily basis.
To tell you the truth, for me, making daily choices are actually MUCH harder than the huge, life-changing ones. I know that sounds kinda crazy, but it’s true. If you’re
or prone to anxiety, daily decisions can feel debilitating. Sometimes the options feel so overwhelming, that it can be difficult to take a deep breath and step back from the situation.
It’s seriously like pulling teeth to get me to decide on a restaurant when I go out on the weekend.
Just ask my poor boyfriend
– I over-analyze, I change my mind, I weigh the pros and cons, I have to visualize myself tasting the food at each restaurant (Like, you think I’m kidding, but I’m not!)…
And all that stuff is great if, you know, picking a restaurant was a life or death decision. But what to wear in the morning? Or what to pack for lunch? NOT such a big deal.
Sometimes it’s easy to feel overwhelmed by all the opportunities and choices presented to us on a daily basis.
It feels like we are caught in a twister of swirling options and we somehow have to grasp for the right choice surrounded by this very confusing fog.
But what if we could learn to fully harness the power of our choices to grow in whichever direction
Imagine how much more time you could save in the morning alone! Those are precious minutes you could be sleeping in, amiright?
I’ve learned that powerful, dream-creating people revel in their ability to take action and make soul-filled and deliberate choices.
So today I’m excited to teach you how to develop a plan to conquer choice overwhelm once and for all. No more enie-meenie-miney-moe. If you find yourself freezing up or freaking out over the choices you need to make, these next two posts will share with you my surefire methods for making choices that resonate with your soul.
It’s that time of the year again, folks. People are starting to get the sniffles.
I was stuck at home for two days this past week fighting off a nasty cold myself.
And although I would have much rather spent that time getting some real work done, there
one tiny silver lining to a sick day stuck at home. As I was cuddled up with 4 different blankets (no joke!), and a nose to rival Rudolphs’, I couldn’t help but realize how it takes catching a no-good virus to get me to slow down and rest a bit.
Sometimes, when you have a low-grade fever and absolutely ZERO energy, you can experience a serene sense of calm that’s hard to achieve during the hustle and bustle of a normal day. The other things just don’t seem to matter – all you are focused on is resting and feeling your best again. I always feel extremely connected to my body and spirit when I feel ill, my mind just isn’t up to the task of dealing with the usual worry and chatter.
In fact, I remember
back in my acting days
, I would give some of my best performances when I had a fever. I just didn’t CARE how I was doing, so the performance was natural and uninhabited.
But living a direct and simple life doesn’t have to be a byproduct of catching a cold. In fact, it might be one of the greatest things we can do to help us stay healthy, sane, and focused on the things that matter most.
Have you had an item collecting dust on your to-do list for quite some time?
Honestly, I think there are a few items on mine that have been sitting there for weeks, maybe even months.
Sometimes you get to an item on your to-do list and it’s hard not to look like a deer caught in headlights. You stare at it. And stare at it. And you break out into a cold sweat and stare at it some more.
Because the next task on your to-do list is SO monumental, SO huge and important, that you have no idea how to make it happen.
And it’s easy to get uncomfortable and discouraged, and want to take a nap instead, or watch reruns of Full House, or any number of mindless, “filler” activities that pass the time, allowing yourself to procrastinate on your dreams.
And then, months from now, when you are
feeling stuck, you start to feel dejected because you are not seeing actual progress and your dream still feels SO FAR AWAY.
Daydreaming is nice, but living a dream feels SO MUCH BETTER.
I’ve been there my friend.
The guilt that manifests from inaction use to
me. I felt like I was wasting time, like precious time was slipping away from me every moment I spent feeling lost on how to accomplish my dreams.
And that’s when it hit me.
Every time I pull up my calendar, or add a new thing to my to-do list, I’m essentially searching for the most effective use of my TIME. I was making the decision on how I wanted to spend my MOMENTS on earth.
Time is just a series of moments.
Something can take a year to accomplish or a minute – but no matter the time frame, they are both comprised of singular moments, one after one, that continue to add up until the project is complete.
And as long as you fill each moment to the brim with inspired activity, you will start to see change.
Decades or years sound very scary sometimes. But moments – those are
We can handle moments.
In order to create the change you crave in your life, you must break down every big dream into MANAGEABLE MOMENTS.
Do you ever look back on your schooling and think, “Now why in the world did they not offer a class on that?!”
Where was the elective on Time Management? I know I could have used a few lessons about Healing from Heartbreak. And most of all, there should have been a class about effective communication. Because Lord knows we use that skill EVERY. SINGLE. DAY.
Seriously, when are we NOT communicating? Sometimes through our actions, mostly through our words…communication drives nearly everything we do. It would be pretty difficult to achieve goals, realize dreams and pursue lasting relationships without the use of effective communication.
Come to think of it, lousy communication is usually the root cause of many of our most dreaded problems! Broken relationships, misunderstandings on work projects, terrible family issues – poor communication is at the core.
So here’s what I propose – why not brush up on our communication skills? You have nothing to lose and everything to gain.
Because pristine communication skills not only benefit your personal and professional relationships, but they help you achieve your wildest of dreams while using less time and effort. And a
lot less drama.
Use these 8 communication tools to become a shape-shifting communicator with clients, coworkers, loved ones and friends.
Have you ever felt the real world give you a major SLAP IN THE FACE?
Owwww. Well… that hurt.
You know what I’m talking about – we’ve all had moments where our expectations about life were just blown out of the water, everything we thought to be true crumbled in a million little pieces and scattered off into the wind, never to be seen again…
For me, that moment came after college. It was the moment that I realized your career takes up a freakin’ LARGE AMOUNT OF YOUR LIFE.
In college – going to class, hanging with friends, studying for tests, going out to parties – these were all the activities that comprised a normal day. Life was busy, but everything was exciting and new.
I figured that when I graduated and started work, it would feel the same way, but instead of class it would be my place of employment. Not all that different, right?
So very wrong.
Staying in one building with the same people for 8…10… or 12 (sometimes longer!) hours a day turned out to be
like class. There are no mid-day naps. There’s rarely a change of pace. All of the sudden, you go home and realize that you only really have 4 hours or so until you
start it all again
. And even when you DO get home, it’s hard to keep all that work stuff from flooding your brain. There’s no off switch! Sometimes, you even DREAM about work in your sleep! Weekends go by too fast. There are no semesters to count the time. If you are unhappy in your career, this realization can feel like being hit over the head with a ton of bricks.
I learned EARLY on that if you spend the majority of your life at work, you better devote that time to a career that makes you happy.
Take a look at these 9 steps to finding happiness within your career, and start making those hours count!
Last year I went to Walt Disney World and wore my visor and bright, white tennis shoes with pride.
During high school, every Spirit Week we had a dress up day where everyone wore their tackiest outfit. I would go ALLLL out – pig tails, mismatching clothes, crazy makeup, fanny pack and high-waisted pants. I would nervously sit in the car with my mother before school started, watching the kids go in and out of the building…and not a SINGLE ONE would be dressed for the occasion. My eyes would well up in tears…how could I possibly go to class looking like this if no one else dressed up too?! Did everyone forget it was Tacky Day over the weekend?! I was distraught. Inevitably someone would dress up and I wouldn’t feel as bad.
Sometimes it’s tough to be tacky.
But that’s not the type of tacky I’m talking about right now. Tacky stands for much more than outdated hairstyles and gaudy jewelry. After reading this post, you’ll be proud to call yourself tacky too.
Tacky stands for
You can breathe a sigh of relief…it’s now cool to be tacky!
When you are tacky, you validate others. You give the people around you a voice, a way to express themselves and be heard. Give everyone you meet the time, attention, care & kindness they deserve…and that includes you too! Be tacky and you can create miracles.
There are quite a few reasons to celebrate today, (summer is right around the corner, LIFE IS FLIPPIN’ AWESOME) but the reason I’m celebrating is because I am overjoyed by the response I’ve received from people all over the world accepting May’s Monthly Mantra & Challenge! It just tickles me to think that people from far and wide are using their beautiful gifts to give this month!
Which got me thinking… I covered the basics, but it’s time to get into the nitty-gritty of what it means to adopt a Mantra (or any type of affirmation you might be using), and to show you how it can create positive, lasting change in your life.
