Honestly, I think there are a few items on mine that have been sitting there for weeks, maybe even months.
Sometimes you get to an item on your to-do list and it’s hard not to look like a deer caught in headlights. You stare at it. And stare at it. And you break out into a cold sweat and stare at it some more.
Because the next task on your to-do list is SO monumental, SO huge and important, that you have no idea how to make it happen.
And it’s easy to get uncomfortable and discouraged, and want to take a nap instead, or watch reruns of Full House, or any number of mindless, “filler” activities that pass the time, allowing yourself to procrastinate on your dreams.
And then, months from now, when you are
feeling stuck, you start to feel dejected because you are not seeing actual progress and your dream still feels SO FAR AWAY.
Daydreaming is nice, but living a dream feels SO MUCH BETTER.
I’ve been there my friend.
The guilt that manifests from inaction use to
me. I felt like I was wasting time, like precious time was slipping away from me every moment I spent feeling lost on how to accomplish my dreams.
And that’s when it hit me.
Every time I pull up my calendar, or add a new thing to my to-do list, I’m essentially searching for the most effective use of my TIME. I was making the decision on how I wanted to spend my MOMENTS on earth.
Time is just a series of moments.
Something can take a year to accomplish or a minute – but no matter the time frame, they are both comprised of singular moments, one after one, that continue to add up until the project is complete.
And as long as you fill each moment to the brim with inspired activity, you will start to see change.

You can either A) Desperately try to control everything and never ask for help from others (any of my control freaks relate?? Why do we do this to ourselves?! B) Work with random people who have no sense of your vision, or C) Find people who inspire us, understand our dream language, and help us reach those goals while enjoying the process along the way.

But sometimes navigating the blurry line between personal and business relationships can be a difficult task, so in this series we are looking at the top 4 archetypes of personal to business relationships, and the best ways to transition them for professional success. We will take a look at:
During high school, I craved Thursday mornings. While most kids were pressing the snooze button on their alarm clocks, I was alert and at school long before the first bell would ring. A few friends of mine started a Yoga Club and were desperate for new members – so I decided to give it a try. They recruited a lovely local yoga teacher to donate her time for our weekly sessions, and we all would pile into the stinky high school wrestling room for class. The lights were dim, the music was soft, and all the stress of college applications and high school drama seemed to just melt away.
But what I remember the most was the incredible meditation time at the end of each session. I was raised in a southern Catholic household and didn’t have an inkling about meditation or anything truly spiritual. I was entirely disconnected from my body and my own sense of self, so this yoga and meditation sequence was truly transcendental. I felt like I came alive during those morning sessions and I would carry those peaceful feelings with me throughout the rest of the day.
Fast forward 8 years and I still very much consider myself a beginner when it comes to meditation.
I’ll meditate for 15-20 minutes once a week or so, but most of the time I find my mind start to wander and I begin thinking about how old the avocados are in my fridge, or how cute that YouTube video was with that baby and puppy.
The fast pace of New York City seems to leave my nerves frazzled and my head spinning; I need meditation
more than ever!
So I thought it would be a neat experiment to try some different types of meditation and share my findings. Whether you are brand new to meditation, or you want to spice up your beginner routine, here are my honest opinions about some basic meditation techniques.
Each technique will be rated in 4 different categories:
Feel Good Factor
(how much of an impact it had on my mood and general wellbeing),
(how long I was able to maintain a heightened sense of inner-peace after the meditation), and

Meditation allows us to connect to our source, diffuse our stress and revive our souls. Although meditation can clear our minds, it even more importantly allows us to access our true inspiration.

Yesterday afternoon I sat down at my computer for some well-deserved Soultiply time.
I had woken up, made my smoothie, went to the gym to workout with my lovely boyfriend, (Friends at home still following the
Mind, Body & Soultiply Quest
? I hope you are ready for some healthy motivation!) showered and was ready to work.
But the moment I sat down to crank out some serious inspired writing, I felt myself coming up short. I knew what I wanted to talk about, but it felt like fatigue was barreling over me like a runaway train. My mind was spinning; I just couldn’t concentrate, let alone come up with any worthwhile or helpful ideas. So I took a nap instead, and ended up feeling crabby for the rest of the day, frustrated that I couldn’t use my scarce, uninterrupted spare time to create something wondrous and helpful for my Soultiply readers.
Sleep, rest, and relaxation just seem so secondary when it comes to the amazing work that I want to share with the world, all the goals that I want to accomplish, all the people that I want to help. Who needs all the other stuff when you have
to look forward to every day?!
But that’s where I was VERY wrong, my friends.
Because I woke up this morning and I
felt caught in a creative rut. None of the whining and guilt of last night helped remove ANY of that crap.
But this time, I embraced the feeling (instead of moping around and rejecting it) and I thought, “What can I do to get around this? What do I, Brittany Ritcher, NEED today?”
And the answer popped into my brain the very moment
that I allowed it
– I needed to enjoy some nature, go on a nice walk through the park, and take some well-deserved downtime.
And I did exactly that.
I rounded up the
“Let’s take a walk through Prospect Park!”
He had never been before and it had been 5 years since I had ventured to the area, so we packed up our things and had an impromptu, adventurous day.
We saw rolling hills, dogs splashing around in the lake, small children running through the grass and enjoying the sunshine. We both found a shady spot next to a creek to relax for an hour (seriously, it didn’t even feel like the city!) and it was exactly what the doctor ordered. I felt inspired and rejuvenated upon my return.
I think as many young professionals and burgeoning entrepreneurs might relate to, it can be hard to find a stopping point in regards to our careers.
When your success is up to you, there is ALWAYS more work to be done and never enough time to do it. Especially when you are young and devoid of family responsibility, your free time is entirely up to you and your dreams are just an arm’s length away.
I remember back when I was acting
, it was always so difficult for me to find a good stopping point, because there was always another audition that I could submit for, or more preparation that I could do for my character.
In fact, even now, the more I work on a project and feel inspired, the more new ideas I seem to come up with… I may cross off one thing from my to-do list, but I end up adding 3 more at the same time!
Trust me, these are delicious problems to have and I hope you have them too. But the real trick is finding the balance to stay on pace and keep your momentum, but without stumbling into the rut of good ole’ burnout.
Over-achievers oftentimes seem like they have it all figured out, but inside they may feel like their accomplishments are never enough.
Anyone else can relate?
Maybe you were the kid in school that none of your teachers worried about because they knew you were smart and could handle it. (You remember the days? Getting good grades because YOU wanted to, not because anyone was twisting your arm about it.) Maybe you try to express your frustration or doubts to others, but they scoff at you because they think it’s silly that someone as successful as you would have any worries about your future.
That’s a lot to handle alone. I want to give you the gift that can oftentimes be hard to give to yourself. I want you to stop, take a breath, and soak in the
feeling of accomplishment.
First, what does it truly mean to feel accomplished?
For me, it’s when I recognize that
I have made progress on something worthwhile
. It’s hard to feel accomplished when you do something that you don’t care about, or something that you think is a waste of time. No, feeling accomplished comes when you conquer (or at least make progress) on something that sits near and dear to your heart, or something that is important to you and your ability to keep doing your best.
So here are 5 of my most tried-and-true ways to tap into your sense of accomplishment in order to give yourself the power you need to keep moving forward.
My parents bought a brand new camcorder when I was born.
You remember the kind, the clunk of a machine that needed two hands to keep steady and came with a shoulder strap and a padded case. God forbid you left the house without extra cassette tapes!
And the home videos they recorded are a hoot, let me tell you!
They aren’t like the little 3 minute clips that children of the Iphone Generation will watch someday; no, they are sprawling 30 minute recordings filled with the hilarious mundane moments of our childhood.
The crying fit I threw when I was too scared to run around in the sprinklers. The ridiculous playground games my sister and I created while Ma was silently recording us through the kitchen window. We Ritchers love to rewatch home movies. The clips just never get old. There’s nothing better for a laugh than my obnoxious, hammy persona in front of the camera, my sister’s awkward venture through puberty and 8 years of braces, and my brother’s sweet, yet sometimes girly tendencies he inherited by being smothered by two older sisters. I cherish those VHS memories.
It’s nuts to think that if my mom wouldn’t have recorded those moments, there is a good chance they might have slipped away with all the other undocumented days of my youth. Memory is a fickle thing; this is the proof of my past.
And it’s so easy to hang onto the past, especially the really good memories…or the really bad.
You earned good grades during school. Every day you write out your goals and to-do lists with fervor and you check off each completed task with pride. Your calendar is packed full with meetings and brunches and projects galore. You are a motivational junkie – you just can’t get enough because you know there is always more out there for you to achieve.
I feel ya! In fact… I’m right there with you!
But sometimes, there is a dark side to being a high-achiever. Sometimes the fast pace can trip you up. Sometimes it’s easy to get IMPATIENT when things slow down.
We just don’t know how to handle downtime! It isn’t in our DNA. It’s such a foreign idea, that when we
have that time to ourselves, we practically go nuts.
And it’s even worse when the downtime isn’t by choice. When the downtime comes because an idea of ours isn’t working as quickly as we would like, or we aren’t getting response on our latest endeavor, or GOD-FORBID we actually failed at something and we have to go back to the drawing board. If we don’t have something to show for ourselves in record time, we become discouraged because it doesn’t fit the standards we have set for ourselves. We’ve set the bar too high.
So how do you handle the downtime without driving yourself crazy?
The secret is learning to ALLOW. That’s all there is to it.
But I know a word like “allow” sounds really fluffy and vague and very very scary to anyone who keeps a tight schedule. So I’m going to give you 5 strategies to help you delve into the nitty-gritty of what it means to allow and how you can do it
Do you ever look back on your schooling and think, “Now why in the world did they not offer a class on that?!”
Where was the elective on Time Management? I know I could have used a few lessons about Healing from Heartbreak. And most of all, there should have been a class about effective communication. Because Lord knows we use that skill EVERY. SINGLE. DAY.
Seriously, when are we NOT communicating? Sometimes through our actions, mostly through our words…communication drives nearly everything we do. It would be pretty difficult to achieve goals, realize dreams and pursue lasting relationships without the use of effective communication.
Come to think of it, lousy communication is usually the root cause of many of our most dreaded problems! Broken relationships, misunderstandings on work projects, terrible family issues – poor communication is at the core.
So here’s what I propose – why not brush up on our communication skills? You have nothing to lose and everything to gain.
Because pristine communication skills not only benefit your personal and professional relationships, but they help you achieve your wildest of dreams while using less time and effort. And a
lot less drama.

Have you ever felt the real world give you a major SLAP IN THE FACE?
Owwww. Well… that hurt.
You know what I’m talking about – we’ve all had moments where our expectations about life were just blown out of the water, everything we thought to be true crumbled in a million little pieces and scattered off into the wind, never to be seen again…
For me, that moment came after college. It was the moment that I realized your career takes up a freakin’ LARGE AMOUNT OF YOUR LIFE.
In college – going to class, hanging with friends, studying for tests, going out to parties – these were all the activities that comprised a normal day. Life was busy, but everything was exciting and new.
I figured that when I graduated and started work, it would feel the same way, but instead of class it would be my place of employment. Not all that different, right?
So very wrong.
Staying in one building with the same people for 8…10… or 12 (sometimes longer!) hours a day turned out to be
like class. There are no mid-day naps. There’s rarely a change of pace. All of the sudden, you go home and realize that you only really have 4 hours or so until you
start it all again
. And even when you DO get home, it’s hard to keep all that work stuff from flooding your brain. There’s no off switch! Sometimes, you even DREAM about work in your sleep! Weekends go by too fast. There are no semesters to count the time. If you are unhappy in your career, this realization can feel like being hit over the head with a ton of bricks.
I learned EARLY on that if you spend the majority of your life at work, you better devote that time to a career that makes you happy.

Last year I went to Walt Disney World and wore my visor and bright, white tennis shoes with pride.
During high school, every Spirit Week we had a dress up day where everyone wore their tackiest outfit. I would go ALLLL out – pig tails, mismatching clothes, crazy makeup, fanny pack and high-waisted pants. I would nervously sit in the car with my mother before school started, watching the kids go in and out of the building…and not a SINGLE ONE would be dressed for the occasion. My eyes would well up in tears…how could I possibly go to class looking like this if no one else dressed up too?! Did everyone forget it was Tacky Day over the weekend?! I was distraught. Inevitably someone would dress up and I wouldn’t feel as bad.
Sometimes it’s tough to be tacky.
But that’s not the type of tacky I’m talking about right now. Tacky stands for much more than outdated hairstyles and gaudy jewelry. After reading this post, you’ll be proud to call yourself tacky too.
