Today calls for a celebration!
There are quite a few reasons to celebrate today, (summer is right around the corner, LIFE IS FLIPPIN’ AWESOME) but the reason I’m celebrating is because I am overjoyed by the response I’ve received from people all over the world accepting May’s Monthly Mantra & Challenge! It just tickles me to think that people from far and wide are using their beautiful gifts to give this month!
If you are interested in learning the basics of Soultiply’s Monthly Mantra Program, you can find out more info here …and it’s not too late to join May’s Monthly Mantra – so visit this page for instructions .
Which got me thinking… I covered the basics, but it’s time to get into the nitty-gritty of what it means to adopt a Mantra (or any type of affirmation you might be using), and to show you how it can create positive, lasting change in your life.
The sole purpose of a mantra is to act as a go-to thought, exercise, action or phrase that can bring you comfort and clarity during difficult times.
I started using a Monthly Mantra at the beginning of 2011 – it started out as my New Year’s Resolution and I haven’t stopped since!
In 2010, I was going through some difficult times and I found comfort in setting month-long goals for myself to try to instill new, positive habits. They included a “ Boy Cleanse ”, not wearing makeup for a month, and my Lovely Leg Challenge. I used the 30 some-odd days during the month to set a series of mini goals that would contribute to the overarching goal of the challenge. For example, in my Lovely Leg Challenge, I researched and found a leg toning workout that I did every other day, I invested in a nice razor and self-tan lotion, and I focused on the awe of the strength of my legs and the gratitude that I had for them, especially when I considered how they maneuver me around New York City every day. By the end of the month, my legs were rockin’!
Once I realized the success (and fun!) I had with these mini monthly challenges, I decided to develop a Monthly Mantra system as part of my New Year’s Resolution…and the rest is history!
In One Ear…And Out the Other! – The Two Main Reasons for Keeping a Monthly Mantra
My reasoning was two-fold. First, I loved reading Self-Development books and attending lectures and classes, but the wealth of information thrown at you can become mind-boggling! There was so much that I wanted to try and think over, and not enough time to do it! I would leave a lecture cross-eyed and frustrated, unable to digest all the beautiful information I had just received.
In order to create real change, I knew I had to fully internalize what I was learning. So I came to the conclusion that taking one tiny piece of information and living and breathing it for an entire month would be JUST the type of focus that would help me absorb the messages I love so dearly.
Also, I came to the realization that difficult situations were the times when I needed these lessons the most…and that’s also when it is HARDEST to remember them!
By adopting an established monthly mantra, I have my go-to tool handy, so that when a situation arises, I have a mantra already picked to help me handle the situation.
Sometimes my mantra is spot-on. And sometimes the mantra makes me see the situation in a different light, from a perspective I would have never considered had I not chosen this mantra for the month. It’s incredible to see how the Universe supplies you with a message that will be appropriate for you and your life every month, without fail.
If you Got it, Flaunt it! – How to Remember your Mantra
So let’s get into the specific details about adopting a Mantra. One of my favorite parts of the mantra is how I choose to display it. It takes work to create new habits and one easy way to do this is to post the Mantra in a place where you will see it everyday.
I’ve gone through many incarnations over the years. I keep a daily planner, so I like to write my mantra in my calendar, so I see it when I create my to-do list for the day. I also have this super cute Yorkie Beanie Baby that my brother and mother gave me for Christmas years ago (which I named New Yorkie, OF COURSE!). It sits in a little mug on my desk. It’s cute, I love to look at it, and it makes me happy. So at the beginning of the month, I’ll take a sticky note and my colored sharpies, and I’ll create a little doodle about the monthly mantra. I tape the note to the outside of the mug and it is the perfect daily reminder! Another cute idea would be to create a decorative frame dry-erase board to display your mantra. I think this would be a great addition to any workspace, and it would be easy to wipe away and replace the Mantra each month!
Now tell me, how do you display your Monthly Mantra?
What to do if your Mantra Isn’t Working…
If we are getting into the nitty-gritty – this also needs to be addressed : What do you do when your Mantra isn’t “working”? What I mean is, what if your mantra just DOESN’T apply to your current situation or it doesn’t bring you the comfort and clarity that you need during this moment?
This will happen from time to time. My first suggestion is to give it another try. The beauty about the mantra is that it forces you to look at things in a different way than you are used to thinking.
Take April’s Mantra for example… it was “Stop giving a shit about what other people may consider weird.” It’s a very specific mantra. There were situations that I encountered when I needed my mantra last month, but they had nothing to do with anyone judging me. At surface level, it felt like the mantra just didn’t apply. But sometimes I would look at the situation and think, “Well, how would this feel if someone WAS judging my actions and thinking that I was weird for doing this?” and I realized, just by looking at the situation through the lens of the mantra, that my current situation was much better than it could have been! I found gratitude that my current situation DID NOT have the negative implications of judgment from others. So that gave me the little boost of confidence that I needed to solve the dilemma. And even if judgment was involved, I realized that I was in control of my actions, regardless of what others wanted or thought.
Even if it seems like your Mantra doesn’t help on the surface – dig deeper. You might be surprised.
What if that STILL doesn’t work?
Then maybe it’s time to give your mantra a rest. Ask yourself, “WHY isn’t it working right now? What do I really need?” and take a few moments of silence. This is when your soul does the talking. Listen to your gut reaction, the first thing that pops into your head.
Because the beautiful thing is, every month, you’ve internalized the mantras from the months before! You might not remember them word for word, but you’ve developed internal habits that will always be there for you.
Now, I have a pretty terrible memory, so I can hardly remember my Mantra’s from one month to the next. But sometimes, when I’m having difficultly, a mantra from MONTHS (or even years!) before will pop into my head and help me out during my time of need. It amazes me every time…how did I remember that?! Where did it come from!? It’s not a coincidence – it’s your soul knowing what you need at that exact moment.
Maybe it’s not even a mantra, maybe it’s an old saying that your mother or grandmother used to repeat to you when you were a child. You might not have thought of it in YEARS, but here it is, showing up during your time of need.
Silence your thoughts and let your heart speak. The journey of self-development does not abandon you the moment you stop studying. You will remember what you need when the time is right.
Now tell me – If you use a mantra, how has it helped you in the past?
If you don’t keep a mantra, but use something similar – share it with us!
The goal is to create a system that helps you when you need it; having a Monthly Mantra works for me, but you might find a different system that works better for you. Share your results in the comments below – I can’t wait to hear! xo
