In Journey, the player controls a robed figure in a desert and travels towards a mountain. Two players can meet and assist each other, but they cannot communicate with each other via text or speech, and can't see each other's names until after the game's credits. The only way to communicate between the two is through a musical chime, which transforms dull pieces of cloth into vibrant red, allowing the player to progress through the levels.

The developers wanted to evoke in the player a sense of smallness and wonder and to forge an emotional connection between them and the anonymous players they meet along the way. The music is composed by Austin Wintory and it responds to the player's actions. Journey is a visual-only game.

The player's character begins near a small sand dune. A large mountain with a glowing crevice splits peak can be seen from the top of the dune. The character finds the remnants of a once-thriving civilization eroded by sand as they approach the mountain.
