A Two-Terminal Device as a Voltage Source

A two-terminal device is a voltage source. The fixed voltage can be maintained by an ideal source. A real-world source of voltage cannot supply unlimited current.

The Cadence PCB Solutions

A constant voltage source is a device that supplies a constant voltage. A voltage source is ideal where it will maintain the specific voltage regardless of the current. An ideal source of power has no resistance.

An ideal source of voltage is not actually present. The internal resistance of the sources affects the level of the load. A constant or varying voltage can be provided by a voltage source.

PCB design requires a certain level of voltage to function, so using a voltage source is mandatory. The maximum current is what the maximum voltage sources like switch regulators are defined by. The load could handle reliably without a drop in output voltage or increase in temperature due to power loss in the internal resistance.

It is harder to see a current source than a voltage source. It is thought that it is a device that could source a steady amount of current regardless of the load's voltage requirement. The ideal source of current can supply infinite voltage.

The current that flows through the base is what defines the current in the transistor's emitter. A constant current will flow through the emitter if the base-emitter junction is positive. The current loop driver is an excellent example of a current source.

Feedback in the Two-Transistor Current Mirror

No physical source is ideal. No physical current source can operate on an open circuit. There are two characteristics that define a current source.

The internal resistance and compliance voltage are the two things. The maximum voltage that the current source can supply is called the compliance voltage. The two-transistor current mirror has negative feedback in it.

The GS200 in the sinking current limit

The GS200 can operate over the same range when it is sinking current. The GS200 can be used as a highly accurate constant-current electronic load and also as a highly accurate voltage source.

The control of a transformer's turn ratio

A transformer's turn ratio can be changed by mechanically changing the number of taps on the secondary coil of the transformer, as well as shortening the winding and changing the number of effective turns on the secondary. The range and resolution of tap changes are fixed because there are a limited number of tap positions in the regulator. The lifespan of the regulators is dictated by the number of tap changes it makes and the goal is to reduce the number of replacements and maintenance costs.

ngspice and OpAmp

The input to ngspice is read from a file and can be enhanced by commands on the command line. The output can be plotted as a y-x graph or a smith chart. There is no graphical user interface with schematic capture of circuit diagrams and automatic netlist generation, however there are third party tools available to draw the circuit and generate a ngspice netlist.

The next example is amplifier. The amplification device is a npn transistor. Two resistors determine the base current.

ngspice will not accept aCapacitor that does not have a connection at each terminal The input voltage source is called Vin. There is no model for OpAmps.
