The American Bankers Association created the CuSIP system in the late 1960s and early 1970s, when computers were used in securities transactions. Each security had a nine-character code created by CUSIP.
The first six characters are the issuer's name. The last three describe the class. All American securities are assigned aCUSIP number, whether they are common or preferred.
The issuer of the security is identified by the CUSIP numbers. Two securities have the same basic CUSIP. The number 008 is used by AT&T to issue the numbers 008109 and 008AJ8.
