Willie Coffey has represented the town in the Scottish Parliament since the Scottish Parliamentary elections of 2007. The voting pattern shown at the UK General Elections and the Scottish Parliament elections were similar to the one seen in the constituency of Kilmarnock, which has always been seen as a safe seat for the Labour Party. The south bank of the River Irvine was the site of an electric power station. Overhead power lines and tram lines were laid. The tram network went from its peak at its southerly point to Knockinlaw Road in Beansburn.
There are thirteen primary schools, three secondary schools, and eleven nursery schools in Kilmarnock. Prior to that, there was a college in the town called Ayrshire College, which was previously known as Kilmarnock College. East Ayrshire Council manages the schools.
