What Is Food Knowledge?
The UN Food Systems Summit
Indigenous populations are at particular risk of experiencing food insufficiency due to a changing climate and years of losing local knowledge about how to co-exist with nature and the environment. The UN Food Systems Summit is to raise ambition and deliver actions to turn around the current trajectory of the sustainable development agenda and ensure that the next 10 years will bring concrete outcomes. Indigenous communities have demonstrated their ability to conserve land, resources and biodiversity, as well as water and soil.
The origins of local knowledge
Local knowledge is not limited to the original inhabitants of the area. It is not limited to people in the city. All communities have local knowledge, which is rural and urban, settled and nomadic.
Traditional knowledge is a term that is synonymous with local knowledge. Local knowledge seems to be the most biased of the two terms. The concept of traditional knowledge implies that people living in rural areas are isolated from the rest of the world and that their knowledge systems are static.
Indigenous knowledge systems are often associated with indigenous people, which limits policies, projects and programmes seeking to work with rural farmers. The term indigenous has a negative connotation in some countries, as it is associated with backwardness or ethnic and political meanings. People adapt to changes in their environment and absorb ideas from a variety of sources.
Knowledge and access to knowledge are not spread evenly in a community. People may have different objectives, interests, perceptions, beliefs and access to information. Knowledge is generated and transmitted through interactions.
It is linked to the ability to access and control power. In food-insecure areas, the consumption of wild plants is more common and widespread. Famine-foods are plants that are eaten only at times of food stress and that are an indicator of famine conditions.
The Food Quality Problem
A wide range of situational and contextual factors influence the concept of food quality. The figure below shows the characteristics that contribute to food quality.
Governance of FVC
The governance structure of FVC actors links them to each other and to their operating environment. Farmers providing their produce to food companies through contracts are examples of vertical linkages within the overall chain.
Catering
Catering is the business of providing food and drinks to people in a remote location. It is a part of the food and beverage service sector. Food services are arranged at a wedding location.
What are the hard questions about Christmas eve?
You shouldn't expect people who aren't big fans of food to know the answers to the hard questions. It's important to know how much someone loves or is curious about food. Are you doing a Christmas eve quiz?
Over dinner? When you're doing the quiz, make sure you pick the questions that are appropriate. You want Christmas and Thanksgiving-themed questions.
The Food Crisis
Around 40 million Americans and 12 million American children are affected by food insufficiency. African Americans and Latinos are the most affected populations, and anyone who lives without access to healthy food is considered to be in danger. Nutrition is not available for people who live in poverty because of food prices.
Many countries halt food trades during times of economic unrest, natural disaster, or poor harvests. The people involved in creating food for others are often the most food in need. They can grow crops, but they have to sell them all to keep planting.
The cycle continues. Families grow up without access to food and are unable to provide for their families. People live with disease, hunger, thirst, and pain when nobody helps.
The First Four Categories
The first four categories relate to the past, they deal with what has been or what is known. Wisdom deals with the future because it incorporates vision and design. People can create the future with wisdom, rather than just grasping the present and past. People must move through the other categories to get wisdom.
