Limitations of GDS
Most of the limitations are related to data size and not to visualization or transformation capabilities. GDS is mostly suitable for medium-sized data analysis projects and not suitable for large data projects. The files cannot be larger than 100MB and the user cannot use more than 2GB of storage.
Users are limited to 100 uploads per day when uploading files. The number of recipients that a scheduled email report can have is one of the limits that GDS has. You can schedule your report for automatic email delivery for up to 50 recipients.
Using Data Studio to Create Reports
Users often want to use other criteria than dates in graphs, and reports usually use data from several sources. The date selection works in all data sources if Data Studio can recognise the dates correctly. Data from two sources can't be combined into one field because Data Studio can't do that.
GDS Data Blending
The data visualization layer is added to the data stack by the company. It is limited in capabilities because it tries to aim for simplicity. Data Studio looks nice on the surface, but it has many functions that are not polished.
GDS uses a connector to get access to your underlying data, which is not import related. There are partner and open-sourced Connectors that allow access to data from other platforms like Facebook. Data Blending allows users to combine different data sources into a single one.
It is similar to a database JOIN. GDS allows up to 5 sources to be blended in a single operation, as defined by the internet company. The data sources can only be accessed within the report that was created, meaning it cannot be shared or reused.
The idea of Data Blending sounds great but it is not executed well. Data Blending will be a great companion for Explorer mode if it is developed further. GDS relies on the groups of the internet to make data sharing more difficult.
The mechanism is not very easy to use for large organizations that need permission control. If you have a Premium GA account, you can export data from the Analytics section of the website to BigQuery. You would need another layer to explore the raw GA data with GDS.
