The season will start on July 23 or 24 with teams being able to submit up to 30 players. The rosters will be trimmed to 28 and 26 after two weeks. Once teams are limited to a 26 man roster, they can add a 27th player.

Each team will be allowed a three-player Taxi squad for every road trip, giving them immediate options to replace an injured or COVID-19-positive player. The goal is to avoid putting a player on a commercial flight if an injury occurs, but the players will come from the Player Pool. A group of free agents who are ready to play could be a big plus for clubs if they get injured or sick.

The Nashville Sounds and the MLB

The MLB decided in the summer that there would be 26 man rosters in 2020, with limits on the number of pitchers to be rostered and when position players can pitch, but the limits are being adjusted due to the late start to the season and shortened training camps. There are talks between MLB and the Nashville Sounds about having two teams of unsigned players play and work out at Nashville, to provide for an emergency pool of players, should they be needed. Nashville has a great facility for the emergency squad, so it would make sense to base it there.

The 40-Man Baseball Roster in the Major Leagues

The player on the 40-man roster is the one that the club needs to add to the 26 man roster. If a club wishes to promote a Minor League player that is not on the 40-man roster, it must first remove the player from the 40-man roster, either by designating a player's contract for assignment, trading a player, releasing a player or transferring a player. A player on the 40-man roster who does not open the season the 26 man roster must be optioned to the Minor Leagues.

One of the options a player has when he is in the Minors is used for the season. Every season, only one Minor League option is used, regardless of how many times a player is optioned to and from the Minors. Some players may be granted a fourth option year.

Out-of-options players must be designated for assignment and then sent to the Minors if they are not claimed off waivers. The 40-man roster is important in the winter as it protects players from being selected in the Rule 5 draft, which is held in December at the Winter Meetings. If a player is signed at 18 years old or younger, they need to be added to their club's 40-man roster within five seasons or they will be eligible for the Rule 5 draft.

Players who were signed at 19 need to be protected. The Major League team can have up to five additional Taxi squad players on road trips. If the club chooses to carry five additional players, one must be a catcher who was designated before the season began.

The Taxi squad is allowed to work out with the Major League club but not in uniform and in the dugout during games. The Taxi squad will return to their club's alternate training site after each road trip. The universal designated hitter did not return in 2021.

The Texas Rangers Training Site

The Rangers will have a Taxi squad that can travel with the team for road games but must report to the alternate training site while the team is at home. The Taxi squad does not count towards the maximum roster size. The Rangers will play their first game of the season Thursday in Kansas City before returning to Globe Life Field on April 5.

The Texas Rangers alternate training site group will be led by Manager Kenny Holmberg, Pitching Coaches Bill Simas and Jose Jaimes, Hitting Coach Chase Lambin, Bench Coach Geno Petralli, Athletic Trainer Carlos Olivas and Strength and Conditioning Coach Wade Lamont. The Round Rock Express coaching staff includes Holmberg, Simas, Lambin, Olivas and Lamont. The Express will play the Oklahoma City Dodgers on May 6 at Dell Diamond.

The Texas Rangers will have exhibition games for only Round Rock Express Season Members, sponsors and suite-holders. The Express ticket office will email season members, sponsors and suite-holders with more information about how to claim their seats. Express Season Members can become new members by depositing a deposit at the Texas Rangers Alternate Training Site exhibition games.
