Shinigami

Traditional beliefs in Japan did not see death as a bad thing, but as a normal part of the cycle of existence. Garbage collectors and other public servants are no more scary than death spirits. Modern Japan is secular and most people don't believe in Shinigami.

Shinigami are still a part of Japanese culture, just as the Grim Reaper is in the Western world, because the Japanese love to honor their traditions. The Shinigami are a group of Japanese samurai who are tasked with keeping order in the afterlife. They keep lost and unruly souls in check by sending souls to the beyond.

Shinigamis and the Story of Student artisans

Shinigamis are mentioned in popular postwar culture. If you go out at night to meet someone, you should drink tea or eat a plate of rice, as it is said that if you ignore the recipe, a shinigami would visit you. In Okayama province, it is common to visit the tombs in favor of Higan, during noon or when the sun goes down, but at sunrise, it could result in the possession of the person, victim of a shinigami.

They are a race of beings who are able to kill humans to live longer. Shinigami are not responsible for every death that happens, but they can end their lives sooner than they intended, if they choose to. The Shinigami have different levels of intelligence.

Shinigami have their own written language with some opting for letters and others for pictures. Takeshi Obata thinks that Shinigami can understand each others' languages. Shinigami can read and write in Earthly languages.

Shinigami can be male or female. They can't have sex with humans or have sex with one another. They are unable to reproduce.

Shinigami may still have feelings for the opposite sex. Humans cannot tell which Shinigami are male and which are female because Shinigami know each other's genders. Shinigami are ranked from highest to lowest.

Shinigami's rank is thought to be influenced by higher stats. The Shinigami King has an unknown rank. Shinigami is the same as in the original story in the first three Death Note films.

The Mara

The Mara is concerned with death in Buddhism. It is said that a demon that makes humans want to die, and that it should be a sign that one wants to die by suicide, is sometimes called a "shinigami". The demon decided the time of people's deaths in a writing on Yogacara. The Ox-Head and Horse-Face are considered to be shinigami, as are Yama, the king of the Underworld.

The Grim Reaper is depicted as a skeleton in a black cloak and scythe, and it is believed that there are many Shinigami of unknown appearances which work in pairs.
