SCSI Disk Mode enabled by the HD Target mode
HD Target Mode was implemented by Apple with the PowerBook 150 and 190 drives, which enabled SCSI Disk Mode by converting external commands into the ATA driver. PowerBooks were only compatible with disk mode for the 140, 145, 145B, 150 and 170. If all internal drives on the chain are set to different IDs than the active host system's devices, then the startup process can be suspended unofficially on any Macintosh with an external SCSI port.
Target Disk Mode
Target Disk Mode has many advantages. Macintosh computers allow their internal or external peripherals to be used on the host computer. Target Disk Mode is helpful when the display of the computer is malfunctioning or when the transfer speeds are high. It is a popular method of transferring data between two computers.
Target Disk Mode is a boot mode that allows you to browse and transfer files from a Mac to a PC without the need for a computer. Volumes mount instantly and using a cable means transfers are much faster than wireless methods. You can't use the target Mac while it is in Target Disk Mode.
Your Mac becomes an enclosure for your drive. You will need to connect and restart your Mac in order to use it again. Wait for macOS to detect your Mac's drive.
Failure of Target Disk Mode on a Mac
Target Disk Mode will fail if the Mac is using FileVault to protect the internal drive. Before you can use Target Disk Mode, you need to turn off FileVault.
Tip: Connecting Firewire to your Macs in Target Disk Mode
It's a tip. The Mac you use as an external hard drive is the one that you want to start. The target Mac's disk can be used to copy files from one location to another.
If both of your Macs do not have a Thunderbolt port, you can connect with FireWire. You will need a Firewire cable to link the two Macs if they have a FireWire port. Once you have decided on which connection you'll be using for Target Disk Mode, you need to power down your Macs and connect them with the appropriate cable.
If your target Mac is a MacBook, Apple recommends that you use the AC power adaptor to plug it up. You don't need to do anything else to use Target Disk Mode with Migration Assistant. The Migration Assistant application can be opened once your user loads.
