If there is a fault in the wiring system, electrical grounding is used. The "hot" current is the negative half of the charge. Black wires carry the hot current while neutral wires carry the positive charge in your home's wiring system.

The ground and grounded conductor's voltages will be 0V and 480V, respectively, with respect to the ungrounded phases. You can read 266V from the ground if the Y- connected system is firmly grounded. If the system is ungrounded or high-resistance grounded, you can read 266V.

The diagram shows the system ground and equipment ground connected. Every transformer and alternator have their own pits for neutral grounding. The pits for power equipment are isolated from the system used for control.

Grounding and isolation in electrical engineering

In electrical engineering, ground or earth is a reference point for an electrical circuit from which a common return path for electric current can be found. Earth ground is connected to the power distribution systems to limit the amount of power that can be sent out. A distribution system that is insulated from earth ground may have a high potential due to the effects of static electricity or accidental contact with higher potential circuits.

The lightning protection systems are designed to mitigate the effects of lightning by connecting to extensive ground systems.

Since lightning strikes are very high frequencies, grounding systems for lightning protection use short straight runs of conductors to reduce the self-inductance and skin effect. In computer repair shops and electronics manufacturing workers are not allowed to work on devices that are capable of being generated by humans.
