Downburst and Snowfall

A cauliflower-shaped cloud with a flat base and sharp edges. The air is falling into the columns of tuppence. The base will begin to gray as the cloud and cloud droplets grow.

Downburst is a sudden rush of cool air that can impact with speeds greater than 70 mph and cause damage similar to a tornado. It can occur near the leading edge of the storm or in heavy rain. The damage from the air does not show the same motion as a tornado would.

The leading edge of the storm's downdraft of air is the gusts front. It is usually felt as a change to cool winds and is preceded by the rain. Sometimes a shelf cloud can turn into a roll cloud.

The warm air moving up and down creates a swirling of air that can be felt. The cloud looks like a rolling tube. It is not in the middle of the storm.

A tornado is a column of air in contact with the ground and extending to the thunderstorm base. It can be a few yards across. A towering cloud is a cloud that grows taller than the width.

The Weather Hazards of the Day

The unit used to measure air pressure is called inch of mercury. It shows the amount of pressure the atmosphere puts on a single inch of mercury. During the day, snow squalls are usually the most intense.

Visibility is reduced to almost zero with almost no warning when snow squalls are accompanied by strong gusts of wind. Sleet is one of the more unpleasant precipitation events that can turn roads and sidewalks into ice-skating rinks. When rain or snow falls, sleet graces the world as it turns into ice on its way from the sky to the ground.

Next-Generation Radar is an acronym that stands for Next-Generation Radar, which is a type of radar that uses a burst of energy and analysis to generate weather data. The time it takes for the energy to travel and the phase of the pulse are measured by sophisticated instruments. Christian Doppler is the Austrian physicist who created the Doppler effect.

Waterspouts are made of cloud-filled wind that descends in a rotating form over a body of water, unlike tornadoes which are made of water. They form over lakes or oceans but are less intense than tornados. Unlike sleet, which is ice formed by rain falling through very cold air, hail is a much more dangerous phenomenon.

Powerful updrafts inside of storms force water above the freezing level. The water becomes too heavy for the updraft and comes crashing down to Earth. Ice storms are episodes of freezing rain that occur when precipitation falls in liquid form and freezes on contact.

The Climate and Weather of the Earth

Blowing snow can cause dangerous driving conditions. Strong winds can blow snow that has already fallen onto the ground. Climate is the average weather conditions in a certain place.

Climate changes only over hundreds or thousands of years, even though weather may change from day to day. Many animals and plants need a certain climate to survive. Dolphins and palm trees can only live in warm climates, while polar bears and spruce trees need a cold climate.

Ice crystals floating in the air above the surface are called clouds. Clouds come in many shapes and sizes. Clouds can form at ground level, at great heights in the atmosphere, and everywhere in between.

Clouds offer important clues to understanding the weather. The Dew Point is the temperature at which water starts to condense. The temperature at the dew point is determined by the amount of air in the room.

The higher the air temperature, the more the air contains water. A region has a lack of rain. For a season or entire continent, a dry spell can affect a small area.

Weather Vocabulary in Speaking Test Part 2

You will most likely use weather vocabulary when talking about yourself in Part 1 of the Speaking test and it may even be the topic of your Part 2 talk and follow-up questions. Weather is a topic that can be used in both Writing and Reading tasks. The lighter evenings are one of the best things about spring. If you want to spend time outdoors, you can.
