The hackers would have had more difficulty accessing customer accounts if Yahoo had used stronger and more secure technology sooner. The principle of data security is that security must be a priority for the board of directors.
If the board had been involved in security-related matters, Yahoo would not be in this situation. It appears that Yahoo knew of a data breach in the year of 2014, but did not investigate. It is not clear whether the company had proper policies and procedures in place or not, but it is clear that Yahoo should have done more in the first place when it became aware of the intrusion.
Yahoo did not have insurance for cybersecurity in its Form 10-Q. Yahoo spent more than $10 million investigating and remediating the two data breeches. The company is facing numerous lawsuits stemming from the breaches.
