What is a race?

Depending on your location, your racial identity can be different. A person may consider themselves black in America, but not in a different country, because of the country's racial constructs. Race is dependent on your upbringing.

If a person has a Native American parent or was raised in a Native American community, they could consider themselves a Native American. Unlike race, which is based on physical attributes, your ethnicity is based on traditions, language, and culture. When you think of your ethnicity, you look at your culture and your physical characteristics.

Ethnicity is not a single type that fits all people. You can find different sub- groups within each ethnicity. Someone who is Japanese but raised in America could consider themselves to be Japanese-American because of their cultural ties to both groups.

There is no genetic basis for race according to White House research. Humans are related to the same genes. The genes that make up those same genes are what make up the differences between dark and blue eyes.

Your genes determine your physical attributes. Your traditions and culture are influenced by how you are raised. It can get confusing to know what constitutes race and ethnicity.

Prejudice

A person's thoughts, feelings, attitudes, and beliefs about a group are described in the term prejudice. Prejudgment is a judgement that is not based on experience. Discrimination is the actions that are directed against a group of people based on their race, religion, age, and other indicators. Discrimination focuses on the actual behaviors against a group while prejudice refers to attitudes and opinions.
