The Prison Policy Initiative: How many locked up is the United States?

The organization claims there are 2.3 million people confined nationwide, with state and federal prison populations, jails, immigration detainers and facilities holding juvenile delinquents. The channels appeal to a grim curiosity among viewers, but hosts say their often controversial content attracts a wide audience. People who use the site for a sense of community, relatives who want to know what their loved ones are going through, and white-collar criminals preparing to serve time are some of the people who watch.

Fortunately, YouTube is kind in how they handle copyright strikes. You have to complete Copyright School before strikes end. The only other solution is the counterclaim option.

You will need to keep a clean account during those 90 days or risk further punishment. Deleting offending content won't resolve the strike. There are copyright strikes on the internet.

Make sure you have the rights to use the content you uploaded to YouTube, otherwise you will be in trouble. The definition of fair use is open to interpretation. A legal battle over a video is not something you want.

The first jails in FreeBSD

The first jails were in the version of the software called FreeBSD that was released in 2000. DragonFly supports most of the original features, and several of the new features have been made available for download. The jail mechanism of the FreeBSD system restricts the activities of a process in a jail with respect to the rest of the system.

The processes are locked up. They cannot access divert or routing sockets because they are bound to specific addresses. The security.jail.allow_raw_sockets option can be set to enable raw sockets.

The jail restricts interaction between processes that are not in the same jail. The base system of the jail does not allow the virtual machines to run different versions of the same system. The same bugs and security holes are exposed by all virtual server.

The host computer and host kernels are the only points of failure for virtual server. It is possible to use jails to test new software, but not new kernels. If the web server is jailed, the scope of user www is limited to the jail, which can be very minimalist.

The sexual abuse of juvenile facilities

A national survey conducted in 2012 found that 10% of young people in juvenile facilities reported sexual assault by a staff member, with the majority reporting that they were sexually abused by a peer. 20% of the people who were violated were victims on more than 10 occasions. Georgia, Illinois, Ohio and South Carolina had rates of at least 15%.

Two-thirds of female state prisoners are mothers. A study found that more than half of mothers in state prison never have a chance to see their children. While most fathers in prison report that their children are living with their non-incarcerated parent, mothers in prison are more likely than fathers to have children living in foster care.

Women who are convicted of felony drug crimes can be denied welfare benefits and food stamps. Employment options for people convicted of a crime are very limited. Most states allow employers to deny jobs to anyone with a criminal record, even if they have not been in prison in a while.

Private prisons: a critical appraisal

Several governments around the world have embraced the use of private prisons in response to the rising number of prisoners. Private prisons are run by private individuals. Privatization of public prisons, contracting managerial powers of a public prison to a private company or corporation, and getting permission from the government to build a private prison are some of the methods used to establish private prisons.

Private prisons are seen as an alternative to public prisons for housing convicts. It is easier to run a low-cost budget while giving the same treatment to prisoners as in public prisons. Private prisons can sometimes offer better rehabilitation and training programs.

The US government has increased its reliance on private prisons for detaining immigrants who commit civil crimes. Private prisons are criticized for maintaining an appearance of cost-effectiveness and efficiency, while in reality the institutions are understaffed and unsuitable for handling prisoners. The American Civil Liberties Union has pointed out a lack of accountability for private prisons.

Men in the Twin Cities
