The south side of 37th Street, between 5th and 6th Ave is my favorite street in all of New York City.
If you live in NYC, or you’ve visited – there is a very good chance you’ve never been on this street.
It’s dirty and filled with Midtown hotels and cheap wholesale clothing stores that sell nothing but fur or beads.
But a walk along this street has the magic to transform my day.
Without having to think about it, I’ve created a gratitude habit SO STRONG that it jars me out of worrisome thoughts without the use of my conscious attention. This habit has put my ego in its place. And it’s a habit that we

It’s that time of the year again, folks. People are starting to get the sniffles.
I was stuck at home for two days this past week fighting off a nasty cold myself.
And although I would have much rather spent that time getting some real work done, there
one tiny silver lining to a sick day stuck at home. As I was cuddled up with 4 different blankets (no joke!), and a nose to rival Rudolphs’, I couldn’t help but realize how it takes catching a no-good virus to get me to slow down and rest a bit.
Sometimes, when you have a low-grade fever and absolutely ZERO energy, you can experience a serene sense of calm that’s hard to achieve during the hustle and bustle of a normal day. The other things just don’t seem to matter – all you are focused on is resting and feeling your best again. I always feel extremely connected to my body and spirit when I feel ill, my mind just isn’t up to the task of dealing with the usual worry and chatter.
In fact, I remember
back in my acting days
, I would give some of my best performances when I had a fever. I just didn’t CARE how I was doing, so the performance was natural and uninhabited.
But living a direct and simple life doesn’t have to be a byproduct of catching a cold. In fact, it might be one of the greatest things we can do to help us stay healthy, sane, and focused on the things that matter most.
Have you had an item collecting dust on your to-do list for quite some time?
Honestly, I think there are a few items on mine that have been sitting there for weeks, maybe even months.
Sometimes you get to an item on your to-do list and it’s hard not to look like a deer caught in headlights. You stare at it. And stare at it. And you break out into a cold sweat and stare at it some more.
Because the next task on your to-do list is SO monumental, SO huge and important, that you have no idea how to make it happen.
And it’s easy to get uncomfortable and discouraged, and want to take a nap instead, or watch reruns of Full House, or any number of mindless, “filler” activities that pass the time, allowing yourself to procrastinate on your dreams.
And then, months from now, when you are
feeling stuck, you start to feel dejected because you are not seeing actual progress and your dream still feels SO FAR AWAY.
Daydreaming is nice, but living a dream feels SO MUCH BETTER.
I’ve been there my friend.
The guilt that manifests from inaction use to
me. I felt like I was wasting time, like precious time was slipping away from me every moment I spent feeling lost on how to accomplish my dreams.
And that’s when it hit me.
Every time I pull up my calendar, or add a new thing to my to-do list, I’m essentially searching for the most effective use of my TIME. I was making the decision on how I wanted to spend my MOMENTS on earth.
Time is just a series of moments.
Something can take a year to accomplish or a minute – but no matter the time frame, they are both comprised of singular moments, one after one, that continue to add up until the project is complete.
And as long as you fill each moment to the brim with inspired activity, you will start to see change.
Decades or years sound very scary sometimes. But moments – those are
We can handle moments.
In order to create the change you crave in your life, you must break down every big dream into MANAGEABLE MOMENTS.
Four years ago, when my boyfriend and I started dating, I sat him down and told him the blunt, honest truth. I told him, “I cry. A LOT.
And I mean a lot.
I cry when I’m upset, I cry when I’m happy, I cry when I stub my toe, I cry when I’m stressed. Sometimes, I cry just because I haven’t cried in a while. But I need you to realize, just because I’m crying does not mean that the world is going to end. Do you understand and accept this?” Luckily for me, he did. Crying was part of the contract.
Because I am proud to say that I recognize I am a highly emotional person. And I own it! And if you are having difficulty in day-to-day situations because of your disposition, or you feel guilty for being emotional–breathe a sigh of relief, because IT IS possible to succeed as a highly emotional person. Even if you don’t consider yourself emotional, but you spend lots of time around people who are, there are tips and tricks that you can use to navigate the ups and downs of your relationships.
